The Antarctic Treaty was signed on 1st December 1959 by the 12 countries then active in Antarctica. The treaty set aside Antarctica as
a scientific preserve, establishes freedom of scientific investigation, and bans military activity on the continent. The treaty was the first arms control agreement established during the Cold War. Today there are 52 signatory countries. For several years, the negotiations progressed very slowly with competing military intentions being openly stated by several of the parties involved. To the relief of the world however, reason eventually prevailed and the treaty was signed.
