Cover: THE LIGHTS OF DIWALI
Mentioned in early Sanskrit texts, during the Hindu lunisolar month of Kartika (Oct/Nov) each year, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists hold a fi ve day long festival of lights as part of one of the major festivals celebrated on the Indian subcontinent. Although the festival, in modern times, is oft en secularly devoted to success and abundance, the symbolism of light throughout these days of celebration have a far deeper, more spiritual meaning, as is found as well in many other traditions worldwide.
